Dr. Kate Scannell: The Avandia story -- science at the wounded heart of medicine
Posted: 07/24/2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
THE TROUBLING story about the diabetes drug Avandia concerns everyone — not "just" the millions of diabetic patients who have taken it.
It concerns everyone because it provides an instructive and cautionary tale about prescription drug evaluation and marketing in general. And, importantly, the Avandia story adds to the awesome burden of uncertainty and mistrust that already weighs down our health care system and drives up its costs.

Dr. Kate Scannell: UC Berkeley's novel "oral exams" - DNA testing of students
06/27/2010 - FOR MANY college students, "taking oral exams" is a rather routine experience. But never before has that meant students collecting CSI-type swabs of their oral cavities and submitting them for DNA tests.
Until now, that is.

Dr. Kate Scannell: A toast to new life! Or, whatever
05/30/2010 - NEWS MEDIA have been brimming with headlines these last couple of weeks, declaring that the creation of life — or something like it — has been accomplished by human hands. Wow! Now that's a definite attention-grabber!
Or so I thought.

Dr. Kate Scannell: Left to their own devices - When medical device makers mislead us
04/24/2010 - IN 2005, a 21-year-old college student died while bicycling with his girlfriend during spring break through a remote area of Utah. Four years earlier, his cardiologists had implanted a defibrillator in his chest, fully expecting it would correct the erratic life-threatening heart rhythms known to sometimes occur in people with his type of heart condition. But the defibrillator failed to shock the young man's lethal rhythm back to normal. He collapsed and died suddenly.

Dr. Kate Scannell: Who owns your genes?
04/11/2010 - CAN YOU patent a toe? A nose? An elbow? A gene? Should we allow private companies or universities to patent parts of the human body?
